The Question:

Dan,
My name is {name withheld} and I am a clinical exercise physiologist. I have been working in cardiac rehab and secondary prevention for the past eight years. However, working in this arena I feel very ignorant in the area of sports physiology and I have a 16 year son that plays high school football. He plays receiver and runs a 40 in 4.8. He is 74 inches and weights 165 lbs. He wants to get that speed down to about a 7.4 to 7.5. He has great athleticism and I was hoping through a good strength conditioning program he could achieve his goals. Here is the catch, he is currently playing basketball. His passion is football but I didn't want him to over- train during a season. After basketball, he will be training exclusively for football. Can you give me some training samples for both in season and off season?

The Answer:

I am also a father and know how much you would like to help your son. In order to run a 4.4 to 4.5 forty it definitely takes a quality weight training program to increase power. I do have the off-season programs developed for football and basketball but I don't have the in-season programs developed yet. I am working furiously to get all the programming done, answer e-mails, train the U of A athletes etc. However, when I get specific requests such as yours I work extra hard to fulfil them as soon as possible.

In the meantime, a very good alternative would be the 2 Day Strength and Power Express Program. This will provide a great foundation of work without doing too much to bring about overtraining symptoms. Thank you so much for your concern and for choosing Fitrex as your online health and fitness provider!
