The Question:

Since I'm a beginner, I always read alot of articles to educate myself and see what's the better work out for certain muscle groups; However I'm having a difficult time finding any articles that specifically deal with forearms. Can you help--do you have some pointers or do you know a web site address where I can findout more about this subject.

The Answer:

Great question. The forearm muscle group is primarily comprised of slow twitch muscle fibers and therefore responds best to higher repetition training. Check out the Fitness Info section located on the upper right hand side of the Fitrex home page. Then, click on the words "forearm muscle". You will find 6 different variations of forearm exercises that work great for developing both the flexor (front) and the extensor (back) areas of the forearms.

Another great way to give the forearms greater overall mass is to do bicep reverse curls. This will train the biceps brachioradialis muscle group located on the outer or lateral side of your upper arm and attaches on the other side of the elbow joint. Including this exercise in your workout routine will also help to improve the overall development of your forearm muscles. Some fun ways to train the forearms are simply to use wrist roller exercises. Tie a 5 foot rope to a 2 foot wooden dowel rod. Put a 5 pound weight on the other end of the rope and simply roll the rope (and the weight) up and around the dowel. This exercise will really pump the forearms and create great muscular endurance.
