The Question:

I used to work out everyday like crazy and didn't give my body enough time to recover....now the muscles on my back are so tense that it rubs uncomfortably against my spine to the point that it cracks my back sometimes with movement of my back muscles. It doesn't hurt but I know that there's not suppose to be any kind of noise like that. Well, I had one session of accupressure/massage and I'm wondering if it is okay or legitimate before I go on to the next session. What's your opinion and fact?

The Answer:

You definitely need to take a few days off. If you are overtrained you need to rest. If you have recently had accupressure/massage you should not train on the same day. But you could train the next day with no problems. But again, since you are overtrained just give yourself at least 2-3 days to relax! You can do very light activities like walking for 30 minutes or playing golf, or a short (30 minute) game of tennis. Just do something fun, eat healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, low fat protein sources etc.) and then slowly start back into your normal training routine.

Now, you don't want to overtrain again so reduce your weights and look at maybe only training 3 days per week instead of 5 or 6. Learn to know what it feels like when you start to overtrain. Here's a little trick. Start taking your pulse rate every morning before you get out of bed. If your pulse rate is 5-6 beats higher than normal you should back off on your training that day. Have fun and don’t try to conquer the world everyday!
